Every morning, I greet the day with 16oz of warm lemon water. This is before coffee, breakfast, etc. Early morning lemon water can re-boot digestion, elimination, and support metabolism functions.
Warm lemon water is one of the handiness tips in my tool belt; here is why:
1. AIDS IN DIGESTION
Drinking hot lemon water right when you wake up (before your morning cup of coffee) is a strong aid in jumpstarting your metabolism and cleansing the digestive system.
It is as simple as this: water boosts metabolism (the rate at which your body burns fat for fuel)! Lemon is a digestive aid and further supports this process.
2. REDUCES NAUSEA
Ever wake up and feel nauseous in the morning?
Although we consider lemons as quite sour, they actually have the opposite digestive effect. They have a basic-effect on our gut pH, which can ease early morning nausea.
Nausea is often the presence of excess Pitta in the large intestines, meaning: you have a buildup of digestive enzymes that are waiting patiently for you to feed them proteins to break down. Lemon water will help reduce the acidity in your gut and ultimately, reduce that uncomfortable sensation. If you have significant nausea in the morning, you can also add a chunk of raw ginger.
Ginger is an antiemetic, meaning it reduces the severity of nausea and vomiting.
3. BOOSTIN’ YOUR IMMUNITY (“OJAS”)
In Ayurveda, we refer to our bodie's “lymph” and “immunity” as “Ojas”.
Slurpin’ on an early morning glass of lemon water in the morning is a great way to supplement extra Vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium into your diet.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a powerful antioxidant that helps your body ward off illness. It is super critical for the formation and healing of connective tissue (bones, blood vessels, skin, cartilage, teeth, etc
4. HEALTHY SKIN
As explained above, a single lemon has ~ 40mg of Vitamin C (suggested intake is ~100mg per/day). Vitamin C is critical in collagen synthesis; therefore, has quite the impact on skin health. Vitamin C can be taken internally or applied topically if directed specifically towards skin health.
5. SUPPORTS MORNING BOWEL MOVEMENT
At least one bowel movement per day is ESSENTIAL. I cannot stress this enough. Our bodies excrete waste in many different ways (ears, skin, urine, eyes, nose, etc) but our colon is one of the greatest ways for the body to remove toxins and waste. Not having a daily bowel movement can lead to the reabsorption of harmful bacteria, leading to autointoxication.
We already know that lemons increase our metabolic process (rate of digestion), allowing for our morning stool to come nice, early + well formed.
Lemons also contain pectin fibre which supports colon health, and serves as an antibacterial.
6. WEIGHT MAINTENANCE
There have been studies that support that the intake of lemon water attributing to increased metabolic rate and therefore, weight loss.
After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water, the subjects’ metabolic rates — or the rate at which calories are burned — increased by 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of water consumption and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes. (source)
7. PROMOTES EARLY MORNING WATER INTAKE
I start off my morning preparing my lemon water before taking my supplements. This encourages a good amount of water intake right off the bat. Win-Win situation, friends.
The average person should drink ½ body weight (in oz) in water, each day. For example, if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75oz if water per day.
Did you know that 75% of Americans function chronically dehydrated? Hydration is a very simple and fundamental law needed for your body to stay healthy.
Cellular processes cannot happen optimally when dehydrated.
If you gain anything from this post – DRINK WATER.
The lemon rind needs to go into the glass. Most of the beneficial chemical components in lemons are from the rind. Squeezing a slice of lemon in your water will only yield a fraction of the benefits.
It is truly advised to use organic lemons.
