The 80/20 Effect: Let Go of Hard and Fast Rules

Rules: we love to hate them

Goals: we hate to love them.

Nonetheless, they keep us accountable.

They keep us honest.

We are responsible for our energy. How we expel it, foster it, re-charge it, sacrifice it, strengthen it, etc.

That being said... you ever find yourself on a new regime that requires more stress, time, and energy to maintain than it's worth? You ever been at a family dinner and guilted yourself out of your own birthday cake because of the rules pertaining to your ‘diet plan’?

Well, Dear friends:

I am here to give you a warm welcome to - The 80/20 rule.

Here’s the deal: 80% of the time, hold yourself to a standard. A high standard that challenges your thoughts, decisions, actions… encouraging productive stimulation of the body and mind.

During that 80% of the time, you are following a routine and maintaining an elevated sense of health and well-being.

The other 20% of the time, you ask? Let that sh*t go. Let it all (proverbially) hang out. Kick back with your pals, a glass (or carafe…) of wine and enjoy that chocolate cake with NO remorse. I mean zero remorse.

Our culture perpetuates ‘guilt’ like a never-ending storm cloud. We have rehearsed the principle of ‘guilting’ ourself both in and out of practices to gain ‘control’. I can promise you, that will not last. You must move from a place of intention, empowerment, and positive outlook to gain positive results. Think about it… from positive thoughts come a positive result. Read more on The Science of Positivity.

If you enhance negative thoughts/panic mode, you being to stimulate your sympathetic nervous system (Fight-or-Flight Mode).

Our Sympathetic Nervous System is responsible for the release of adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine. The catch here: these hormones are inherently inflammatory. Excess inflammation (as you may know) disrupts natural processes of the body, such as digestion, elimination, sleep, and emotional health.

Furthermore, The Vagus Nerve is the longest & largest cranial nerve in the body. It is essentially a superhighway from the lowest viscera of your intestines to the brainstem, attaching to visceral organs along the way (heart & lungs). So, quite literally what you eat has a physiological effect on your brain, attributing to your neurological functions (i.e behaviors and emotions).

What you eat literally has an effect on your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

So, for 80% of the time you are committed to bringing in supportive foods, supplements, herbs, minerals, practices, etc. You are fostering the vagus nerve to support the entirety of the body.

That being said -  that 20%… embrace it like there is no tomorrow. Avoid those negative thoughts.

It's all about that balance. Everything in moderation. Enjoy your 20% without stress or guilt, because whether you believe it or not, stress signals your sympathetic NS and disrupts many processes.
